MIAMs stands for Mediation Information & Assessment Meeting. A MIAMs appointment is the first stage in any mediation. It gives the mediator a chance to meet with each of the couples separately, carry out safeguarding checks and ascertain what the issues are and what each of the couples thinks about the issues. It is also an opportunity to consider other dispute resolution options, which may suit you better than mediation.
Not all cases are suitable for mediation. In a MIAMs appointment, the aim is to decide if mediation is a suitable route for you to take. MIAMs are conducted by the mediator, who can explain all the options for resolving matters without going to court. During a MIAMs appointment, the mediator assesses whether or not the circumstances surrounding a particular case are suitable for mediation.
If you want to issue proceedings to sort out issues relating to children or finances, then in most cases you will have to attend a MIAMs appointment before issuing proceedings and obtain a certificate from the mediator. Jacky Lewis is an accredited mediator and is able to conduct MIAMs appointments and to provide MIAMs certificates.
These meetings can take place in person or by Zoom.
